SHILLONG, Aug 09: Coalition partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government have asked it to come up with stringent measures to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the state.
After the meeting of the MDA chaired by Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma here on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said, “The alliance has advised the government to strengthen the infiltration check gates in the state.”
He informed that the MDA partners have also suggested the need to identify locations in the different parts of the state for the setting up of additional infiltration check gates if required.
“They have also advised the state government to speed up the process of revisiting the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 of improving and making it more effective,” Tynsong said.
Tynsong said that a lot was discussed on the prevailing situation where people are quite apprehensive about the possible fallout of the final draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) released in Assam.
On the other hand, Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling said that the meeting also resolved to request members of the NGOs and traditional headmen to report to the authority concerned on any information they received regarding illegal immigrants.
He also informed that the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of the different districts have also been asked to be on high alert in view of the prevailing situation.
