SHILLONG, Aug 06: The possibility of implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Meghalaya is presently being examined by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government which has asked the political department to examine the matter.
“We have referred in consultation with the chief minister to the political department to study this issue,” Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said in this regard on Monday.
“Let them (department) study and they may come up (with recommendations) in the form of a Cabinet memo for us to then sit down and discuss and take a final decision on the matter,” he added.
Tynsong said that the decision was taken after the government had received demands from pressure groups and also political parties for implementation of NRC in the state.
Tynsong however said that this does not necessarily mean that the government is in favour or not in favour of NRC while stressing that the matter will have to be discussed first.
“In fact we don’t say that we are in favour or not in favour but we are open to the idea of our people in the state whatever recommendation or suggestion being made by them,” he stated.
