SHILLONG, August 02: A day after  the Khasi Students Union (KSU) demanded an NRC like exercise to be conducted in Meghalaya,  Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said that he has referred it to the political department to study and if the need arises they will discuss whether NRC like exercise is necessary or not.

Talking about the proposal submitted by the KSU, the Deputy Chief Minister said that since the issue is very sensitive there is no assurance from the government that it will be implemented and the same was conveyed to the KSU leaders.
The KSU had had submitted a memorandum to the Deputy CM on Wednesday demanding an NRC like exercise in the state to combat influx effectively and identify the genuine from the non genuine residents.
Reacting to the allegation of Congress MP from Silchar, Sushmita Devi that the Meghalaya police along with the KSU were not allowing people from Cachar district in Assam to enter the state without citizenship papers, Tynsong said that there was confusion but it has been sorted out and there is no issue now.
