SHILLONG, July 17: State Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling is seeking to honour the supreme sacrifice they made by three legendary freedom fighters of Meghalaya and has promised to press the state government to find a suitable location where it will put up their busts.
“It will be my duty to ensure that a suitable location is identified for the construction of the busts of all the freedom fighters - of the three tribes – Khasi, Jaintia and Garo - of our state,” Dohling had said here on Tuesday.

Dohling who is a former leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) who had later taken to politics had made this assurance while speaking during a function organized by the KSU to observe the 183rd death anniversary of Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem here.
Dohling expressed his long – time desire to give due recognition and respect to these great freedom fighters by erecting the busts of U Tirot Sing Syiem, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma.
“I will definitely take up this matter with the state government to ensure that necessary action is taken on this regard,” Dohling said.
Lauding the steps taken by the KSU to construct the statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem, Dohling opined that the state government’s decision to declare U Tirot Sing Syiem’s death anniversary as just a state holiday is not enough.
“The state government should not be complacent just by declaring the day as a state holiday as there is more that needs to be done to give befitting recognition and respect to such a great leader,” he said.
Recalling the sacrifices made by U Tirot Sing Syiem, who was the first Khasi chief to rebel against the British rule, Dohling said, “He was a leader with so much of responsibility towards protecting his own people.”
He also urged the people to follow U Tirot Sing Syiem’s footsteps and take upon themselves the responsibility to protect women and children, who often fall victim to rape and other crimes, and to fight against the drug menace which is affecting the youth of the state.
