SHILLONG, July 12: The sudden resignation of the Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), LG Nongsiej resulted in the rescheduling of the election of the Council’s Chief Executive Member (CEM) which was scheduled to be held on Thursday and has now been deferred to Friday.
The former CEM, Pynshngain N Syiem of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) had earlier resigned from the post on the very day that he was supposed to face a No Confidence Motion during a special session of the Council which had necessitated an election during which his successor would have been chosen.

The electoral battle was to be between the National People’s Party (NPP) MDC representing Nongkrem, HS Shylla and late entrant into the fray, PDF MDC from Nongshken, Grace Mary Kharpuri, which however could not be held on Thursday as scheduled due to Nongsiej’s sudden resignation.
Apparently, Nongsiej who is also from the PDF had submitted his resignation to the Council’s Secretary (Legislative), just a few hours before the 2 pm schedule of the elections, which members of the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) had termed as an ‘inappropriate step’.
It may be noted here that Shylla had emerged as the candidate after members of the KHDA had held a meeting to decide who would contest from among the constituent alliance members.
Shylla later said that they were informed that the election has been postponed to 11 am on Friday due to this sudden development and accordingly a protem chairman and caretaker have been appointed.
Alleging that the move was an intentional one that was pulled off by the PDF, Shylla said, “We are not surprised because we were already told by their strong supporters that we will not get a new CEM today and only after a few minutes, we got the news that Nongsiej had resigned.”
Also slamming the former KHADC chief PN Syiem, Shylla said that under his leadership, they have failed to fill up the post of a deputy chairman, which was lying vacant for many years, just to create unnecessary problems in the Council.
Further dubbing Nongsiej as an irresponsible leader without any principles, he said that the former Chairman should clarify as to what made him to resign when he had already announced during the recently held emergent session that the election for the CEM post will be held on Thursday.
“Such an irresponsible leader and also those who are behind instigating him to resign as chairman should quit as members of the House,” Shylla demanded.
He said that the newly formed KHDA has the support of 18 MDCs which includes the lone MDC of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), Adelbert Nongrum who had come forward to extend his full support to the alliance on Thursday.
He also claimed that another PDF member Morningstar Mawsor has also assured that he will support the alliance.
