SHILLONG, July 10: Nongkrem MDC, Hispreaching Son Shylla is seeking a return to the post of Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and as such will be contesting the post during the elections which will be held on Wednesday.
Shylla who belongs to the National people’s Party (NPP) is the candidate that the newly formed Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) is projecting to succeed Pynshngain N Syiem as the CEM after the latter had resigned from the post on Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Tuesday, few hours after Syiem tendered his resignation letter as CEM of the Council before its emergent session.
The KHDA which is likely to form the new executive committee has the support of 17 MDCs in the 29-member House. These include 5 members from the UDP, 4 each from the NPP and PDF, 3 HSPDP and 1 Independent.
“We have unanimously decided to project Shylla as our candidate for the CEM post. He will be filing his nominations tomorrow,” HSPDP MDC Samlin Malngiang, who is also a cabinet minister in the MDA coalition government, informed after the meeting.
Shylla, who is also a former CEM of the KHADC meanwhile said that the decision was based on protocol as he is the senior most among the members in the KHDA.
Stating there is a need to end corruption practices in the Council, he accused Syiem of running a dictatorial rule in the KHADC while asserting that this must end.
“The previous EC has not done anything on the building byelaws despite the state government already deciding that the MUDA building byelaws will not be applicable in non municipal areas,” he said.
Shylla said that the new executive committee to be formed will ensure that members of the Committee on Village Administration Bill will be reappointed.
