Demand for creation of Civil Sub Division in Mawsynram gains momentum

SHILLONG, July 05: The demand for the creation of a new Civil Sub Division in Mawsynram is growing in intensity, the latest development in this regard being a memorandum being submitted to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma by the MLA representing the constituency, Himalaya M Shangpliang.
Having met the Chief Minister here on Thursday, Shangpliang later informed that the Chief Minister has admitted that Mawsynram deserves to get a Civil Sub Division.

He however said that the Chief Minister has informed that the matter will have to be look at considerably since the state at present is facing a financial crunch.
Shangpliang meanwhile said that the demand for the Mawsyram Civil Sub division is purely based on merit and is a long pending demand.
“Mawsynram Block is one of the oldest and remote block of our state and one of the important tourist place of our state and number of tourist visit every year Mawsynram Block but in terms of development and other amenities and requirements our Block is lacking far behind,” he said.
He informed that that are around 170 villages within the vicinity of Mawsynram Block and that the total population of all these villages comes around 80. 000.
On the urgent needs of proper roads in the Mawsynram region, Shangpliang informed that the CM told the delegation that roads in Mawsynram area have already been included in the list of the PWD schemes and that a copy of this list will be circulated to the MLA of the region.
“The CM also assured that an enhanced financial assistance for development of tourism in Mawsnyaram has also been earmarked,” Shangpliang said while adding “He also assured that he will not leave Mawsyram constituency undeveloped since it is a region full of potentials especially in terms of tourism.”
Pointing out that Mawsnyram is blessed with scenic beauty including waterfalls , various  caves and fossil dating millions of years, the Mawsynram MLA said that he had also told the chief minister about the survey conducted by the Archeological Survey of India which found that there are fossils of dinosaurs dating millions of years in Mawsyram. In this regard, Shangpliang stressed the importance of preserving these places and turning them into tourist destinations.
