SHILLONG, June 14: With Ranikor MLA, Martin M Danggo expected to soon join the National People’s Party (NPP) which leads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government here, the Ranikor unit of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has warned the MDA against sidelining the party by saying that it can go to the extent of backing the Congress camp in the constituency.
“If the National People’s Party (NPP) does not respect the UDP Ranikor, we will not hesitate to stand against Danggo by switching over to the Congress jersey if the bye-election comes,” UDP Ranikor president GG Bung Snaitang said in a statement issued here on Thursday.

Stating that the UDP is a major ally of the MDA government, he said that the NPP should respect the UDP Ranikor Circle by including them in the political appointment at the block, district and state level.
“However, if the UDP Ranikor is not getting its share in the present government and if the state leadership of the UDP fails to intervene, we will also not hesitate to take stern decision to the extent of dissolving the party in the constituency and join other parties in other to give a tough fight to the sitting Ranikor MLA in the bye-election,” he said.
Snaitang, who is also party president of South West Khasi Hills District, informed that an emergent meeting of the party was also held recently to discuss the issue.
He also reminded that in the 2018 Assembly election, the opposition Congress has secured a total of 10,952 votes while the UDP got only 8,950 and other non-Congress and non-UDP parties got 6,928.
He said that in the 2013 elections the party was defeated only by a thin margin of 455 votes.
“Therefore, if the Congress is to seek revenge against Danggo, no doubt he would be destroyed but the people will surely get a civil sub-division,” he said.
Referring to the recent assurance made by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to upgrade the Ranikor administrative unit into a full-fledged civil sub-division at a public meeting held on Tuesday, Snaitang said, “If the move is for the benefit of the people of Ranikor then it is good to know that the CM is respecting the aspiration of the people despite the government is facing huge financial constrains as claimed from time to time.”
“However, if the move is just to increase the number of MLAs of the NPP alone, then it would pose a serious threat to the present MDA government,” he added.
He also warned that people from different quarters like Mairang and Sohra which have been demanding creation of new districts will pressurized their respective legislators to follow the political tactics adopted by Danggo.  He also said that UDP chief Donkupar Roy, who is also Assembly Speaker had assured the people that Sohra will be given a district.
“If Danggo who has not contributed anything towards the formation of the MDA government was granted a civil sub-division, the question now arises whether Mawsynram constituency, from where the PDF leader (PN Syiem) was a former MLA, will be given the same,” he asked.
Snaitang further stated that it would be wrong to strengthen a party by giving civil sub-division in a constituency represented by an opposition MLA just for him to join its fold.
“If this is the trend I will not be wrong to predict that by the time the term of the MDA is to get over, the number of civil sub-divisions will be more than the MLAs in the state legislative assembly (60),” he said.
