SHILLONG, June 11: Residents of Shillong rallied for peace and prayed for normalcy to return on Monday as hundreds took to the street after holding a prayer meeting at the Malki ground here.
Organised by the Seng Samla Malki or SSM, elders of the locality along with the youth held a prayer meeting at the Malki ground praying for peace and normalcy in the otherwise peaceful state which was recently struck by instances of violent clashes at the Mothphran and its adjoining areas.

Hundreds marched through the main thoroughfare of the city with placards that expresses their wish for a return of peace and tranquillity.
“The objective of the gathering is to urge the High Level Committee to speed up the process of re-location of the colony and to express solidarity with those who were at the receiving end of the violent clash,” SSM member W Kharsyntiew said at the sidelines of the rally.
It may be noted here that the Motphran area in Shillong was the scene of violent clashes between the local Khasis and Police personnel who were preventing them from descending upon the Sweeper’s Lane colony where three Khasi minors were allegedly assaulted by the residents this colony.
The violence reached such a point that the district administration had to clamp down curfew in the area which was later imposed in the rest of the city. Even as the district administration is slowly relaxing the curfew hours, the situation is steadily returning to normalcy.
