TURA, June 10: Internet and SMS services, which were stopped since Friday this week, June 8 for the entire Garo Hills region, are yet to be restored despite no incidents of any nature being reported in the entire region. However broadband services are still available.

Internet and SMS services were blocked over fears of rumour mongering following an incident in the GHADC where a sitting MDC, Sofiur Rehman was asked to exit his office as the chairperson of the Forest Advisory Committee by NGOs protesting his appointment to the post.
The NGOs, GSU, AYWO, FKJGP and ADE had surrounded the GHADC office at Tura and later met the CEM, Dipul Marak, to demand the ouster of Rehman. The nature of the protest led to the administration seeking a stop on rumour mongering after which services were stopped for a period of 2 days.
The stoppage was mainly to clamp down on social media, which has been the main culprit in gossip, which could have escalated the situation.
“There were no incidents reported in the past two days which is a very good sign. Services may take a little while to get restored – maybe in a day or so,” confirmed SP of WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
