TURA, June 06: The demand for a separate Garoland state on Wednesday reached the capital of the country, New Delhi, after various residents of Garo Hills rallied in support of the demand in the capital. “The demand for Garoland state is now more than a century old and started during late Sonaram Sangma’s time. Legislators both from the state and the Centre needs to listen to the demand for separate state for the Garos. We have confidence in the Constitution and law makers that the voice of Garo’s will bear fruit. We will continue the struggle for a Garoland state will continue till it sees the light of day,” said chairman of GHSMC, Nikman Marak.
Youth leader, Roger Benny Sangma, who also spoke on the occasion felt that Garos faced problems in their day to day lives and were deprived in many sectors.
“The Law/ Constitution allows creation of a separate Garoland state in sync with State’s Re-organisation Act,1956, as had been used to create states for same language speaking people. If Tura was made the Winter Capital of Meghalaya, by now development of Garo Hills would have been greater. The struggle for a separate state is a long one and it is time for the people of Garo Hills,” said Sangma at the gathering.
