SHILLONG, June 05: Ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in KHADC on Tuesday expressed surprise on issuance of land pattas by the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to settlers at Them Iew Mawlong.
Speaking to reporters after the PDA meeting held here on Tuesday, KHADC chief Pynshngain N Syiem said, “It is surprising that the Syiem had granted permission for construction of the Gurudwara and setting up of business establishments when the agreement signed between the Syiem and the SMB had clearly stated that the land is meant only to accommodate the workers and not for any other purposes. The agreement was also clear that the land will not be allowed to be converted into a commercial hub”.
NPP MDC HS Shylla pointed out that the land at Them Iew Mawlong belongs to Nongkhlaw and Kurkalang clans. “It is illegal on the part of the Syiem to issue land pattas because as per custom the clan has the right to do that,” he said.
Meanwhile, PDA has decided to study all the documents related to the land at Them Iew Mawlong and submit suggestions to the High Level Committee (HLC) constituted by the state government to ensure the Harijans are relocated from there.
The seven-member HLC headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong was constituted to find a permanent solution to the matter in view of the growing demand from the protesters of the ongoing agitation in the city.
He also informed that the KHADC had asked the Syiem of Hima Mylliem to immediately furnish all the documents and submit a brief report on the status of the land at Them Iew Mawlong. “The executive committee will also sit tomorrow (Wednesday) and decide on the next step on the matter,” he said.
Syiem said that the stand of the PDA is firm that all authorized settlers who are working under the different government departments are shifted and illegal settlers are evicted from the land.
Meanwhile, the PDA also condemned the assault on three minor boys at Them Iew Mawlong.
