SHILLONG, June 05: Putting a challenge before the state government, a five member delegations of the United Sikh Organisation (USO) has strongly rejected any move to shift out the people of Punjabi Colony from Them Metor at Bara bazaar.
“The question of shifting them (Sikh population) from the existing location is not acceptable to us. We would like the Government to propose an alternative solution to this problem,” USO member Mohinderjit Singh told media persons after their meeting with Home Minister James K Sangma at his chamber at the Main Secretariat here on Tuesday.
He further said that the Sikh population has never been asked to leave even from Afghanistan and Pakistan adding that the Sikh community has been residing in these countries for more than 100 years.
“We have never been asked to leave even in countries like Iran and Iraq,” Singh said.
He further said that the Sikh communities across the world are ready to support in the construction of multi-storied buildings in the existing location if the Government gives them permission.
“We had in fact requested the Home Minister to allow them to construct beautiful apartments for the Sikh here. So the question of the Sweeper’s Colony of being unhygienic will not remain,” USO member said.
He also informed that they have also requested the Home Minister to allow the top chiefs of the Sikh Community to have a meeting with the local Sikh here to understand their problems and resolve the ongoing crisis in a peaceful manner.
