SHILLONG, May 15: Pressing home their demand for maternity leave, SSA teachers in Meghalaya met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, here on Tuesday.
“We have urged the Deputy Chief Minister for his necessary intervention and he has assured to look into the matter while admitting that it is a genuine issue which the government needs to address,” the president of the Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Schools Associatioon (MSSASA), Aristotle C Rymbai said after the meeting.
He said that the association has been demanding the benefits of maternity leave for teachers in the SSA schools as per provision of Maternity Benefits Act 1961 and Right to Payment of Maternity Benefits and Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Act, 2017.
“This is because since the beginning of implementation of the SSA Flagship Programme in Meghalaya till date, the contractual teachers working under SSA are not entitled to avail the benefits of maternity Leave as enjoyed by other categories of teachers,” Rymbai said.
He also informed that the association had submitted several representations in the past but the then state government has failed to address the issue.
On the other hand, Rymbai further pointed out that in neighbouring state of Assam, SSA teachers are entitled to avail leave as special annual leave, medical leave, study leave besides maternity leave.
