SHILLONG, May 14: A high ranking official of the proscribed Khaplang faction of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN – K) has been apprehended by Meghalaya police from West Jaintia Hills (WJH) district which was being used as a safe haven by this official and three other members of the outfit.
Gaising Maringmei @ Ronal (40), the deputy revenue secretary of the NSCN-K was arrested from a rented house at Mookyniang locality in Khliehtyrshi village, which is about 15 kilometers away from Jowai, the district headquarter, on Sunday, SP Vivek Syiem said.
His arrest also led to the arrest of two other cadres of the NSCN-K Khamjang Rongmei (35) and Thuanguangpou Kamei @ Benjamin (40) from the village.
Another cadre identified as Dimchiulungam, who is a courier of the banned outfit was also arrested with the help of Shillong Police from Police bazaar on the same day, Syiem said.
The SP said that the arrest was made based on intelligence inputs received by the special cell of the West Jaintia Hills police which busted the group of NSCN-K finance cadres operating in Khliehtyrshi village.
“The NSCN-K finance wing appears to be using Jaintia hills as a safe haven to elude the scanner of the security forces and carry on its extortion activities and finance network which includes procuring of arms and ammunition,” he said.
Cash of Rs 2 Lakhs, multiple SIM Cards, mobile phones and other incriminating documents and extortion notes of NSCN-K were recovered from the apprehended men.
Syiem further informed that Maringmei during preliminary interrogation has revealed that the M/S Bharatiya Company Limited which is undertaking construction work in Manipur had recently paid Rs 25 Lakhs as ransom money to him on May 10 in West Jaintia Hills District.
The arrested militant leader however informed that RS 13 Lakhs of the ransom money was being transported by his wife identified as Tanthaoliu Gonmai to Imphal from Shillong on the May 13, through night super bus from Shillong to Dimapur.
Syiem said that the information was shared along with Manipur Police who then intercepted the bus and arrested Tanthaoliu in Imphal West District along with the extortion money.
A team from the district police will be dispatched to Manipur to take custody of Tanthaoliu soon, he said.
Meanwhile, a case vide Jowai PS Case No. 115(5)2018 u/s 121/121A/120B/384 IPC r/w Sec 10/13 UAP Act has been registered against the accused persons.
“They have been produced in the court of the District Session Judge and have got an initial police remand of 4 days,” the SP said.
On the other hand, Syiem said that an investigation team under Jason Mairom MPS, SDPO Amlarem will undertake the investigation to ascertain the depth and extent of operations of the Finance wing of the NSCN-K in the district after which a report on the matter will be submitted.
