SHILLONG, May 09: The construction of toll gates in West Jaintia Hills District and East Jaintia Hills District will lead to the exploitation of people according to the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) which has expressed its vehement opposition to any such construction.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday, HANM-Jaintia Hills Unit president Shaniahlang Suchen said, “We urge you to intervene in this matter and take necessary action so that no toll gates will be constructed in the two districts of the region.”

GR Infrastructure Company has proposed to set up two toll gates along the national highway 44 at 7th Mile, West Jaintia Hills District and Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills District.
It  may be  mentioned here that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has engaged the company for the widening and repairing of the NH-44 stretching from Jowai to Badarpur.
Suchen said that while the repairing and widening work is yet to be completed till date, the company has already started the construction of the toll gates in these two locations, which should be stopped immediately.
“The construction of the toll gates will be burdensome for the general public and will cause a hue and cry by them which may lead to law and order problem in the district in the near future,” he warned.
According to him, the public especially the business community are already burdened with the existence of  three government weigh bridges situated at 7th Mile, West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai, Umtra and Ratacherra villages in East Jaintia Hills District.
“Therefore, the organization opines that this (construction of toll gates) is a mode of exploitation,” he said.
