TURA, May 08: Almost the entire Garo Hills went dark on Tuesday after a cyclonic storm hit the region in the morning hours, leaving a trail of destruction behind. Houses were destroyed, trees uprooted as well as electric poles in many places leaving the entire Garo Hills in darkness which was not restored even till the writing of this report.
The cyclonic storm occurred early on Tuesday morning with hail in some places, preceded and proceeded by strong gusts of wind.

Over 200 households were affected in the storm in East Garo Hills, most of which were in the Samanda block. Villages like Rongongre, Baiza, Jakopgre among others were the worst affected in the district.
After a visit to the affected areas by the district administration, tarpaulin sheets were distributed to the affected people though no camps have been set up.
“Most houses (about 200) were blown away in the storm and many trees and electric poles uprooted. The situation is being monitored,” said DC, Ram Kumar.
The situation was the same even in the districts of West Garo Hills (WGH) and South Garo Hills (SGH) though the affect was lesser. Electricity connection to the affected districts is yet to be restored. Assessment of damages is currently on though no numbers have been provided yet.
Road communication however was not affected much despite the severity of the storm. Roads remained open to traffic.
