Garo Hills rocked by another case of moral policing

TURA, April 16: After the now infamous moral policing case of Paikan in Assam, Garo Hills was rocked by another case of moral policing after a video of the incident was uploaded on social media.
In the video which was allegedly taken near the village of Chibinang under Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills (WGH) district, a young woman can be seen brutally assaulted by the group of so called moral police who all the while shaming her. The incident occurred in the presence of a huge group of people with most either being bystanders or joining in the fun of assaulting the lady.


Immediately after the video went viral on social media, a call for arresting the culprits of the incident gained momentum leading to the police acting on the case after it was informed to them. No date has been put forward regarding the day of the incident.
The place of the incident was narrowed down to the Mronggre-Bikonggre area where sources said the lady in question was enjoying a picnic along with friends. Her presence amongst the group was not liked by the culprits who began to harass her.
The victim, till date has not filed an FIR is from South West Garo Hills (SWGH) district though a suo moto FIR was filed by the police in the instant case on Sunday at the Phulbari Police Station.
“They caught hold of her and then began to thrash the woman all the while accusing her of selling herself. She was thrown to the ground before she was kicked in the stomach, legs, hands – wherever the assaulters could throw themselves at the victim,” said a resident on the condition of anonymity.
Police personnel from Phulbari swung into action after it became known that an assault took place under the jurisdiction of the Police Station. The assault was narrowed down to the picnic spot after which police identified the main accused – Biren Sangma and another Martin B Sangma, both local youths. The others involved in the incident however have made a run for it.
“She was assaulted by the group led by Biren who did not like her in a picnic along with her other friends. She was later handed over to her family the next day of the assault. We have contacted the SWGH police for further action in the case. While Biren has been taken into custody last night, the other accused in the case have fled. Police squads have been mobilized to arrest the other culprits,” said the Superintendent of Police (SP) of WGH district, Dr MGR Kumar.
