James urges MDCs to prove doubters of ADCs wrong

SHILLONG, April 14: Pointing out that of late there have been a lot of people who have questioned the relevance of the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs),  the Meghalaya Minister, in charge of District Council Affairs (DCA), James Sangma has called upon all MDCs to step up and prove these doubters wrong.
James had made this appeal while addressing the 66th anniversary celebration of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) held at Tura, West Garo Hills District on Saturday.

Taking note of the financial constraints that the GHADC is currently facing, James assured that the state government will do all that it can to help solve the ongoing problems.
He also underscored the importance for all the MDCs to work hard in further strengthening the functioning of the GHADC.
James informed that Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma is also concerned about the affairs of the district council.
In his speech, GHADC chief Dipul R Marak highlighted the history on the formation of the GHADC under the leadership of late Captain WA Sangma and late Mody K Marak.
He also mentioned the challenges faced by district council and its employees who have not been paid for almost 14 months now and the recurring pending expenditure amounting to about more than Rs 59 crores.
While seeking assistance and support from the state government, the CEM also mentioned the ongoing projects of the Special Plan Assistance received from the Central Government last year including shopping complex at designated market places, four storey Members’ Hostel at Tura, 7 staff quarters, District Council Museum at Chidekgre, near Babadam, Court Building at the present Tennis Court premises near GHADC office complex and 21 number of guest houses in and around Garo Hills region, to mention a few.
“Some of these which have been built for commercial purpose are hoped to generate revenue for the District Council and around 80 per cent of the work has been completed,” he added.
Earlier, James unfurled the National Flag which was followed by the National Anthem. Bonjera A Sangma, Director, Christian Literature Society, ABDK led the gathering in prayer during the function.
Members of District Council, Senior citizens, other dignitaries, Nokmas, Sordars of various areas and staff of GHADC, Tura were present during the function.
