SHILLONG, April 10: Senior Cabinet Minister, Prestone Tynsong has informed that no senior cadre of the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is active in Meghalaya.
Giving his reply during the Assembly session here on Tuesday, Tynsong said that the activities of the banned terrorist outfit - the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in the state have been firmly checked.
He however said that the state government does not have data on the exact number of militant cadres.
To a query raised by Congress legislator from Salmanpara Winnerson D Sangma, Tynsong said police are on the job to check anti-national forces and completely wipe out militant activities in the state.
“We have also entrusted the police to wipe out the activities of the GNLA,” he said while informing that the government is also extending rehabilitation package to surrendered militants.
The GNLA, which has been active in the entire Garo Hills region by indulging in terrorizing the people, kidnapping and killings, was formed in 2009 with former cop Champion R Sangma as chairman and Sohan D Shira as commander in chief.
While Champion was released from jail recently, Sohan has been killed by security forces on February 24 last.
