TURA, April 08: In a major fillip to the cleanup of militancy operations in Garo Hills, the East Garo Hills (EGH) police on Sunday recovered over 30 pistols along with ammunition besides several sophisticated arms from near the village of Chachatgre across the Simsang River in the district.
The recovery of the arms and ammunition was preceded by the arrest of five persons who later provided directions of where they had stashed weapons in the hope of them being used later for criminal activities.

The five arrested have been identified as Lebison Ch Momin (37, Sengchangpa of Dorengkegre – EGH), Jonathone Ch Momin (32, Manrimpa of Dorengkegre), Albin Ch Momin (45, Gracypa of Dorengkegre), Jatengbath T Sangma (25 also of Dorengkegre) and another 17 year old minor.
“Based on source information, the five people named above were picked by the police over their connection with hidden arms in the district. During the investigation they led us to the many spots where arms and ammunition were hidden. The five were persons suspected to be involved in hiding weapons and will be booked accordingly. We are also identifying more people involved,” said SP of EGH, Ringrang TG Momin.
Police recovered 30 pistols with 44 pistol magazines, 2 AK-46, 1 LMG and 2 magazines, 1 INSAS and 2 magazines, 44 SLR magazines, 1 AK magazine, 60 SLR live rounds, 7 walky talkie sets along with more items after the leading of the 5 arrested people.
“The LMG was recovered from a pigsty and its ammunition from a banana grove in Chachargre. The rest of the recoveries were made from various places in the jungle near the village of Dorengkegre,” added the SP.
The weapons are suspected to be belonging to GNLA though there has been no official confirmation of who the arms and ammunition belong to.
