SHILLONG, Feb 14: A total of Rs 14 lakh has been seized by the flying squads of the Election department in the state capital of Meghalaya in the past 24 hours.
Official sources on Wednesday said that they have seized Rs 13 lakh cash from a vehicle during a routine checking near St. Edmund’s college. Further, the official resources informed that second seizure of Rs 1 lakh cash was made from another vehicle by the sector officer of Nongthymmai. In both the cases there was one person who was caught with the cash.
The occupants of the vehicles have been identified as Mickey Dkhar from Khleihriat with the 13 lakh cash and M Warjri from Mawlai in case of the MES seizure.
Chief Electoral officer, FR Kharkongor said, “We have made the seizure and an inquiry is on. However, so far no political link has been established”.
Ironically, when initially reports came in of the seizure and attempts were made to confirm the same, the senior officials rubbished it as a mere rumor and it was only later in the evening it was confirmed after repeated attempts were made.
It may be mentioned that in order to keep a tab on the use of ‘money and muscle power’ during the upcoming Meghalaya Assembly election, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had deployed flying squads in different districts of the state.
