SHILLONG, Feb 13: While alleging that his rival from Nongkrem constituency, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit had held a public meeting at Mawmuthoh village on February 2, Hispreaching Son Shylla of the National People’s Party (NPP) has said that this is in violation of the Model Code of conduct that has come into effect in Meghalaya.

Earlier, Basaiawmoit had replied to the show cause notice issued by the authority concerned by claiming that the meeting held at the residence of a party worker at Mawmuthoh village was a closed-door meeting of the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP).
However, Shylla refused to agree to this by displaying a programme schedule of the HSPDP for the coming Assembly polls and said, “As per this programme of the party it has clearly indicated that the meeting at Mawmuthoh was a public meeting and not a closed-door meeting.”
He alleged that this meeting was held even after the headman of Mawmuthoh had not given the HSPDP permission to do so on ground that the party had failed to obtain necessary permission from the returning officer.
Shylla said that a party which wants to hold any public meeting should first obtain a NOC from the village dorbar and officer in-charge of the police station before seeking permission from the returning officer, while pointing out that the HSPDP had failed to do so in this case.
Shylla also said that if the authority concerned is serious about implementing the Model Code of conduct, action should be taken against Basaiawmoit.
“If it is just for name’s sake then the matter will ends there. But however I leave it to the wisdom of the authority concerned,” Shylla said while adding that he has no interest to file any complaint on this regard.
