SHILLONG, Feb 13: The former Chief Minister  of Kerala, Oommen Chandy has stated that Meghalaya has seen peace, stability and development which the Congress party has brought about through an environment of goodwill.
“The greatest achievement of the Congress Party in Meghalaya has been the ability to give to the people of Meghalaya peace and stability through an environment of goodwill,” Chandy said on Tuesday.

He also said that this peace and stability has encouraged its old and the young residents to dream for a more developed and better Meghalaya keeping its unique cultural values intact. He also said that the wish of the Congress party is for the continuance of this development process, stability and peace which will take Meghalaya to newer heights of development.
“Today we see people moving around freely till late at night. We see shops open till late at night. Tourists come in and out of Meghalaya without fear. Restaurants and hotels are doing brisk business. Young people are able to move around freely without feeling threatened,” Chandy said while adding that the period of unrest that prevailed before the Congress Government came to power is like a bad dream.
He also said that the Congress party believes that society thrives even when there is dissent and differences and respects freedom of thought and expression of others as that is the essence and spirit of India.
Chandy also said that there is a rise of an environment of discomfort and fear under the present BJP led Government at the centre. “It is seen that in many cases the differences of opinion and the voices of dissent are silenced either through harassment, threat or extermination,” Chandy said while citing examples of journalist Gauri Lankesh, the suspicious death of Justice Loya, and in the string of mysterious deaths in the Vyapam scam in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
