TURA, Feb 11: Meghalaya Speaker and Congress candidate from Phulbari constituency, Abu Taher Mondal has filed a complaint with the Phulbari police in West Garo Hills (WGH) district against social media users who have been taking potshots at him in the run up to the Assembly polls to be held on February 27.
Mondal is in a pitched battle for the seat against the BJP’s Binoy Ghosh, SG Esmatur Mominin of the NPP and independent candidate, Mark Goera Marak.

Facebook users, MD Zuwal, Monirul Islam, Rafikul Islam Sarkar along with many others have been accused of spreading defamatory statements against the Speaker accusing him of stealing CGI sheets meant for distribution by the Housing Board.
The defamatory posts came up after the NPP had filed a complaint against the Congress candidate for allegedly trying to bribe voters after 3 trucks of CGI sheets were found in a school near Demdema. The matter was later cleared up by the election officials who found that the sheets belonged to the state housing department and were kept there due to a lack of space.
“They are trying to influence voters through accusations and it is not fair. I have reported the matter to the police and hopefully those behind such distasteful ways will be caught and given their due punishment,” said Mondal when contacted on Sunday.
Confirming the receipt of the complaint, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of WGH, Dr MGR Kumar said that the matter was being pursued legally.
“A magisterial inquiry is currently on in the case and the matter referred to Court. We have also sought details from Facebook about the accounts and their holders after which legal action will be taken. The case has referred to defamation,” said Dr Kumar.
