SHILLONG, Feb 06: South Shillong legislator, Sanbor Shullai has vowed to ensure that this will be the last defeat in the political career of his bête noire, Manas Chaudhuri.
“I will defeat him (Manas) again and this time by a margin of over 15,000 votes and I will ensure this will be the last for his political career,” Shullai said after filing his nominations here on Tuesday.
Reacting to Choudhuri’s claim that the BJP is a close chapter in the constituency, Shullai however said, “He was denied ticket after the leadership in New Delhi calculated that how can people vote for a man who is sleeping for past 5 years and a man who is not accessible (to the people).”
He further accused the former legislator of misusing his newspaper and said, “In the last 2013 election, he publishes fabricated statement against me but that was defeated by the voters.”
Shullai who is also a former Assembly’s deputy speaker and had left the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joined the BJP last month, said that he will surely retain the seat again in the upcoming Assembly polls, to be held on February 27.
He also pointed out that he has won many elections – five times as MDCs and two times as MLA even though he had contested from different political parties.
Asked why he had joined the BJP, Shullai said that it was because the NCP as it is has no future.
“It is only a matter of time that when Sharad Pawar retires, the party will also disappear. So I have to look at a party which is strong and that is what I did after consulting my people,” he said.
He said that BJP under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is the only party which can bring development not only to the constituency in particular but also to the state as a whole.
