SHILLONG, Jan 09: In a huge booster as well as recognition towards the efforts of Meghalaya in expanding its voters base besides encouraging young voters to exercise their franchise, the Election Commission (EC) has shortlisted Meghalaya’s SVEEP initiative on voter education and electoral participation themed “Mission Unite - You ‘N’ I towards enrolment” as a nominee for the National Awards 2017.
Informing this here on Tuesday, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Frederick Roy Kharkongor said, “The Election Commission has shortlisted the state for creatively engaging the youth and proactive and visible mobilization of young and future voters to enroll in the 2017 campaign.”
The special enrolment drive was launched at the J.N. Stadium, Polo here last year where 2,800 young and future voters assembled in one place as part of the record breaking attempt.
“A notable highlight was the culmination where a Human logo formation of 2873 young and future voters drawn from 113 schools, 3 college’s institutions earned a place in the Limca Book of Records as the largest number of assembled young future voters,” he said.
The campaign aggressively championed enrolment at campus doorstep.
At the end of the campaign there was a net addition of 21,455 new voters to the Electoral Roll amounting to 21.67 percent of the gap which stood at 99,015.
