SHILLONG, Nov 30: The decision made by the President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Dr. DD Lapang not to seek re – election from the Nongpoh constituency will not have an impact on the ultimate result as the Congress party will retain the seat in the upcoming 2018 state polls, according to Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma.

Dr. Sangma informed on Thursday that the decision for Dr. Lapang not to contest the 2018 state elections was made after due calculation which shows that the grand old party will retain the seat.
“Dr. Lapang calculated and said that he wanted to be relieved as a candidate as the party will win the seat,” Dr. Sangma said while reacting to a query whether it will affect the Congress with the decision of senior leaders not to join the fray in the next year’s poll.
Though Dr. Lapang had earlier declared that the 2018 Assembly polls would be his last election from Nongpoh, the former Chief Minister however made a u-turn last week by deciding not to contest the polls.
He instead picked Mayrald Syiem, the current president of the Nongpoh Block Congress Committee as the Congress nominee from Nongpoh in the upcoming Assembly elections.
The other two leaders, who have decided not to contest the upcoming polls include deputy chief minister Roytre C Laloo and health minister Roshan Warjri.
The Chief Minister however made it clear that Dr. Lapang is not retiring from politics but will continue to head the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) as its chief.
“Dr. Lapang is a very active man and he is still the PCC president. With this decision, now he can focus more as the president of the party,” he said.
Dr. Sangma also said that there is nothing new in the development and the decision of the senior leaders has to be respected.
Asked whether there is any move to replace the present MPCC president, the Chief Minister said such types of discussions are not something which can be shared.
“These are all internal exercises and it is this mechanism which allows us to remain where we are,” he said while adding, “Whether there is something or not I will not share with you, no presumption no assumption.”
