SHILLONG, Nov 27: The United Democratic Party has clarified that it will be fielding Mangkara Pathaw to contest the 2018 state elections from Unroi circle even as it has clarified on its earlier announcement of Firstforce Deki Ramsiej as its candidate for the same seat.
Addressing media persons here, circle general secretary Banteilang Ryngkhar said that it was the the party’s State Election Committee (SEC) which had taken the final decision to allot the party ticket to Pathaw from the two names submitted by Umroi Circle.
Ramsiej, who earlier had figure in the list announced by the party as the candidate from Umroi constituency for the upcoming 2018 state Assembly elections, had recently opposed the fresh decision of party to issue the ticket to Pathaw.
Ryngkhar however said that both Ramsiej and Pathaw agreed to the resolution adopted by the executive meeting of the Circle held on November 21, that their names will be forwarded to the SEC.
He also said that it was Ramsiej who had approached Pathaw to join the party when he was with the Umroi Democratic Forum (UDF).
“Pathaw had agreed on condition that Ramsiej should reconsider of not taking the ticket allotted to him by the party and instead allow the people to decide who among them should be the candidate from Umroi,” the general secretary said.
According to him, both Ramsiej and Pathaw had also signed an agreement that if one of them gets the ticket for MLA election, the other will take the ticket for contesting in the upcoming 2019 MDC elections.
“Therefore, the step taken by the Circle was as per the resolution adopted by the executive meeting and not as alleged by Ramsiej that it was because of us he did not get the party ticket,” he added.
