TURA, Nov 07: The North East Hills University (NEHU), Tura Campus continued to simmer over the investigation of the case of harassment of a student by a professor (head of department), SC Srivastava of RDAP who sought his suspension on the allegations.
Earlier last week, students of NEHUSU along with the GSIU, FKJGP and AYWO had demonstrated outside the office of the PVC seeking justice for the victim of harassment while also seeking the suspension of the professor in question. The protestors were also angry at the delay in investigation even after the NEHU Women’s Cell was informed on the matter a month ago.
The NEHU authorities had assured the presence of the Women’s Cell in the Tura campus on Tuesday to begin investigation. However confusion reigned in the campus over the investigators leading to students awaiting as late as 9 pm to understand what the investigators were about to do.
“They were telling us that the said professor was going to be suspended with immediate effect however they did not have the authority to do so. Only the VC of NEHU has the power to do so. We therefore wanted a written statement from the authorities on the action taken and they were unwilling to provide the same in writing. They refused,” said general secretary of AYWO, Sengbath Marak.
The victim of alleged harassment was later called to provide information by the Women’s Cell though as to what exactly transpired is yet to emerge.
Till the time of filing this report, a clear consensus is yet to emerge and students are still waiting outside the office where the investigation is currently on.
