TURA, Sep 13: In another case of neglect shown by the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL), residents of Dobasipara locality in Tura have been in darkness for the past three days after the inability of the MeECL to replace a transformer that broke down late on Saturday evening.
According to locals, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when a huge tree fell across the road on NH 51 blocking all traffic.
“This is pathetic to say the least. If they are unable to repair a transformer in the heart of the town of Tura, we shudder to think about how they must be treating faults in the rural belt,” said UDP joint secretary, Anand Marak who paid a visit to some residents after complaints.
Interestingly, when the MeECL was contacted, its officials cited a lack of transformers for the delay in restoration.
“I was told that they have ordered the transformer and it is on its way but the delay is inexplicable. They should have taken stock of the situation immediately and ensured power was back. We also want to question as to why extra transformers are not kept in the area to ensure complaints can be taken care off quickly,” said Anand.
