SHILLONG, Sep 12: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Chief Dr. DD Lapang has indicated that the upcoming 2018 state elections could be his last, even as he described himself as a ‘disciplined’ soldier of the party.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said he hopes to retain the Nongpoh seat, which he has represented since 1972 when he contested as an independent candidate. Except for 1993 when he lost for the first time, Lapang continued to be elected for eight times as an MLA.
He however maintained that no one is ‘indispensable’ in the party. “I have this believe that no one is indispensable in the Congress party, in the MPCC in Meghalaya including DD Lapang,” he said.

On seeing sitting MDC Rona Khymdeit as a threat, he said there is no guarantee that a sitting legislator will always win, it all depends on how one performs.
“Your performance will speak more as even the role of money cannot guarantee everywhere,” he said.
On his ambitions to once again become Chief Minister, he however stressed that he doesn’t have such thinking anymore. “I don’t have such thinking, I’m sorry. The leader is not be chosen by himself, a leader should be chosen by the MLAs,” he said.
The veteran with 45 years of politics under his belt, an eight-time legislator, has been Chief Minister of the state for four times. “I was a chief minister for many times and I have never struggled anywhere anytime, I have not raised my voice,” he said.
It may be mentioned here that disgruntled members of the party had earlier tried their best to oust the incumbent chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma but failed in their several attempts.
Maintaining that the Congress is a disciplined party, the former chief minister however said, “We are disciplined soldiers of the party and we will accept freely, willingly, responsibly, anywhere where the service is needed.”
“If they (high command) say you have to be there and take the responsibility, we take any responsibility as a soldier,” Dr Lapang affirmed.
Asked what if in the CLP majority of MLAs want him to be the leader, he wittily said, “Don’t create confusion that Lapang now will fight with Mukul… I am a disciplined soldier and anything directed by the party, I am there.”
