SHILLONG, Sep 12: Meghalaya police with the assistance of Delhi police on Tuesday busted a cyber-fraud racketed and arrested seven people including six Nigerian nationals from New Delhi. Two officers of the Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS) of Meghalaya police’s CID with the help of Delhi police conducted raids in several places in and around Delhi on Tuesday morning and made the arrests.
CCPS team was sent to Delhi based on a complaint by a victim from Meghalaya who was duped to the tune of Rs 21 lakh. The case was registered at Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS), CID Headquarters Shillong under section 420 IPC read with section 660 of Information Technology Act wherein
The team was deputed to New Delhi on September 8, 2017, after evidence suggested links of some people based in the national capital.
In a press statement issued here, Addl DGP (CID) BL Buam said, “The team with the assistance of Delhi police got a breakthrough in which they were able to apprehend seven people including six foreigners (who are Nigerian nationals) in connection with the case”.
He informed that the accused persons, which also include two women, will be brought to Shillong on completion of investigation and other legal formalities for further action as per law.
Giving details on the case, Buam said a person was cheated of Rs 21 lakhs by a facebook friend supposedly to have come to India to meet the complainant and that he had been detained at Delhi Airport by Custom officials for carrying huge cash (dollars) and lots of expensive gifts. The complainant was asked to pay money to the Custom officials for the release of the facebook friend and also the cash and gifts which he was carrying for the complainant. Feeling pity for the facebook friend, the complainant paid money in several installments and by the time the complainant realized, the culprit had already duped Rs 21 lakh.
