SHILLONG, Sep 11: The alliance between the Hill State Peoples’ Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) is a viable option for the people of Meghalaya which will ensure a non Congress and a non BJP government after the 2018 state polls according to HSPDP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
“We are very firm in our stance to form a non-Congress and non-BJP government,” HSPDP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said here on Monday.
His statement came after recent reports alleging that the alliance partner UDP is ready to work with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Earlier, UDP senior working president Bindo M Lanong when responding to a query whether the party would consider having a post-post alliance with the BJP, had stated that “How can we be inimical to the BJP as it is important and good to have link with the powers that be.”
However, Basaiawmoit while refusing to comment on Lanong’s statement as it could be the latter’s personal opinion, said, “I feel it would be wrong to say that the flow of funds to the state will depend on the party that governs the country as any government in Delhi is guided by the Constitution of India.”
The HSPDP chief also said that he doesn’t expect any government in New Delhi be it the BJP or the Congress would like Meghalaya to go to China for financial assistance because constitutionally, the state has its own rights.
According to him, the future of many states in the country does not depend on the mercy of any party in Delhi.
“Otherwise if we are hungry and if the mother cannot give us food we have to try to get from the neighbour and I don’t think that any government would like us to go to China with a bowl,” he added.
The UDP and HSPDP had forged a pre-poll alliance earlier this year to fight the upcoming crucial state elections, slated to be held in February next year, from the 36 assembly seats from Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
Expressing full confidence that the alliance will get the magic number, Basaiawmoit said that the alliance is being forged to come into power by providing a viable alternative to the people of the state.
“This alliance is going to be a viable alternative to the people of the state. So it is going to be a non-Congress and a non-BJP government because we are determined without any doubt to get the numbers,” he said.
Basaiawmoit also maintained that it would be too early to say that the UDP-HSPDP alliance will be working with any political parties after the elections.
“However, if at all if we have to work with any other political party it has to be through a mutual understanding among the constituents of this alliance and no single party can decide alone,” he said.
Asked what would happen if the alliance falls short of the number projected, Basaiawmoit said that the alliance is confident of getting the numbers while understanding the mood of the people of the state which is against the present party that rules the state.
“In case this happens any decision on that matter will only be taken after the votes are counted when we get a clear picture after the elections,” he said while pointing out there are other political parties like the NPP and NCP and independents.
Stating that there is still a long way for the BJP to make inroads into Meghalaya, he said the alliance is very confident that it will not fall short of the number. He also appealed to the people not to be misled as the alliance was forged to provide a viable alternative to the state.
