Boston encourages students to rise above adversity

SHILLONG, Sep 08: Recalling his humble beginnings from a village school, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Boston Marak said that his experiences should serve as inspiration for students to rise above adversity and to make better futures for themselves.
Marak had made this appeal to students while speaking at an event held at SMELC Conference Hall, Dakopgre, Tura to observe World Literacy day on Friday wherein he highlighted the transition of the system of education from past to the present which provides better learning opportunities as time changes.


Further, he advised the students to focus on education in their prime time and also asked the concerned parents to encourage their children to understand the importance of education in their life and contribute to the growth and development of the society in their capacity. He also suggests the concerned department to organize this kind of programmes in the rural areas so as to sensitize the parents the importance of education required for their children.
While delivering her keynote address, Additional Deputy Commissioner & District Mission Coordinator, West Garo Hills Sabrella B Marak said that the key aspect of observance of World Literacy Day is to mobilize public opinion in favour of struggle against illiteracy and a forum to disseminate information on literacy and raise public awareness about the significance of literacy for individual and national development. “Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy”, she added.
Initiatives under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), West Garo Hills was presented by UG Sangma, Block Mission Coordinator, Gambegre highlighting various special training programmes and other activities undertaken by SSA in the district.
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), West Garo Hills district has also conducted a Model enrolment drive for Out of School Children in all the blocks of the district for which the Educational package for few selected students were distributed by the Chief Guest on the occasion. Presentation of song, dance and skit by Kasturba Gandhi Ballika Vidyalaya schools of the district and Out of School children were some of the highlights of the day’s celebration.
