Monsoon rain claim 3 lives in city Weakened tree comes crashing down on vehicles

SHILLONG, Aug 12: Incessant rains over the past few days took a sad turn on Saturday when a water laden tree finally succumbed to the weight and came crashing down on vehicles, killing three people and injuring two others.
While authorities are yet to identify those who were killed, the other two people had a providential escape with only minor injuries.


This incident happened near the Raj Bhavan when an old tree came crashing down onto moving traffic and directly onto vehicles plying the route.
“Three persons died but the bodies are yet to be identified and two persons sustained minor injuries,” the Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills (EKH) district, Davis Marak informed on Saturday.
The old tree which has stood at the Raj Bhavan for decades came crashing across the road at around 4 pm pulling along with it electric posts and wires.
Police meanwhile informed that one of the local taxis which was completely crushed whose registration number is yet to be ascertained reportedly had 2 occupants while the other two vehicles with registration numbers ML 06-4171 and ML 05 P- 0643 which were also damaged reportedly had 5 occupants.
