SHILLONG, Aug 07: The recent creation of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) by the Government of Assam and the ensuing surveys being made to demarcate and identify the areas of land which will fall under its purview is posing a threat to areas under neighbouring West Garo Hills (WGH) district according to the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP).
Claiming that the Government of Assam das demarcated areas under Meghalaya as being part of the areas to be included under the RHAC, the FKJGP has raised its concern and filed an official complaint in this regard with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of WGH district, Pravin Bakshi on Monday.
“It has been brought to our knowledge that on such surveys the surveyors have identified certain areas of Pedaldoba Village, under West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya to be a part of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) which will de facto render those areas under the Government of Assam. We were also informed that, even the office of the Range Forest of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) was identified as area falling under the RHAC,” the FKJGP informed in the complaint.
Informing the DC that the survey made by the concerned departments of the Assam Government to identify and demarcate the RHAC is being perceived as transgression by the people of Pedaldoba, the FKJGP said that these apprehensions of the people are not being taken up either by the GHADC or the district administration.
As such, the FKJGP has urged the DC to ensure that the district administration takes immediate action in this regard so as to build confidence among the residents of the Pedaldoba Village and to resolve the issue amicably.
