SHILLONG, Aug 04: Former CID inspector of Meghalaya Police Anjan Chakraborty was on Friday arrested by a joint team of Sadar Police and Kolkata police from a place near SBI Evening Branch, Police Bazaar in connection with the Kolkata cheating case and a scam of Rs 2.5 crore.
When contacted, SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that the retired inspector CID of the Meghalaya police has managed to cheat many people of Kolkata by posing himself as the Assistant Commissioner of Police.
A complaint lodged at Ekbalpore PS in Kolkata states that sometime on and before July 19 this year, Chakraborty entered into a criminal conspiracy and in pursuant to which forged ID card of Kolkata Police and produced the same as genuine for the purpose of cheating thereby impersonating himself as Deputy SP of CBI, deputed to Kolkata Police and induced the complainant either to pay Rs 2.5 lakh or he would be implicated in false case. The complainant paid Rs 1 lakh to get rid of the situation and thereafter paid the rest of the amount.
Prior to his arrest in Shillong on Friday, an unsuccessful raid was also conducted at Arunachal Pradesh after information was received that he was residing in that state.
It may be mentioned that this is not the first time where a case was lodged against the retired inspector.
In 2014, two FIRs were registered against him at Shillong Sadar police station by two people alleging his involvement in a fraud case and for indirectly cheating them of Rs 19,50,000 and 14, 000 respectively.
On December 2015, Chakraborty was arrested in connection with the criminal case registered against him.
On July 27, 2017, the state police issued a notice informing the suspension of Chakraborty’s Retired Identity Card bearing the ID serial number 0211 after information was received that the retired CID official is wanted in connection with the Ekbalpore (Kolkata) PS case.
EKH SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that the Kolkata police has taken Chakraborty to Guwahati Airport and will take him to Kolkata by flight since he has to be produced in the court at Kolkata by Saturday morning.
