TURA, Aug 04: A group of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres are the prime suspects in the brutal thrashing of two men in the village of Halwa Bilda in the remote stretches of South Garo Hills. The incident took place on Wednesday night after group of 6-7 armed GNLA men rounded up the two men before giving them a round thrashing on suspicion of the two being police informants.
Interestingly police sources stated that the group behind the thrashing of the two civilians is the same one that is suspected to have killed Olget R Marak (53) in the village of Dambuk Aga early the same day.
“We received information of the group of cadres two men in the village on Wednesday and immediately dispatched a team to the village of confirm the details. When our men went there and found the same to be true they immediately put on stretchers and brought them to Baghmara Civil Hospital for medical treatment. They were assaulted on allegations of being police informers,” said superintendent of police for SGH, Abraham T Sangma.
The two civilians have been identified as Arban D Shira (39) and Walseng Marak (42). The two are said to be recovering after the brutal bashing with both able to talk on Friday.
Interestingly, about 3 months ago, the commander in chief of the GNLA, Sohan D Shira, had a narrow escape in an encounter with the police.
