TURA, July 16: A 9 year old boy, Suman Sangma, from North Garo Hills who had gone swimming with his friends on Sunday is feared drowned.
Sangma had gone to learn swimming with his friends on the Manda river close to Dainadubi in North Garo Hills.
The incident occurred today at about 10 am after Church services, though his friends only informed the parents at about 2pm this afternoon after which the police were also informed.

“They went to learn swimming in the river and he even had a piece of rope tied around his waist when the incident happened. We believe he was sucked in by the current surging through the river due to the continuing monsoon. His friends immediately began a search for him but fear only led them to inform the parents later,” said a resident of the village.
The police began an immediate search for the young boy but till the time of reporting child was yet to be discovered and his fate is only being speculated.
The victim’s parents are daily wagers with locals joining the frenetic search for the boy immediately after they received information.
“We are yet to locate the boy (till this evening) and search operations will continue tomorrow. There is also a fear that he may have been taken away towards Assam which is close to the village,” said a highly placed police official.
