SHILLONG, May 18: Ri Bhoi District is all geared up to celebrate its 25 years of existence in all pomp and splendour.
The Organizing Committee of the Ri Bhoi District Silver Jubilee Celebration will be organizing a five-day celebration at NSCA Stadium, Pahamsyiem from June 5 to June 9.
Announcing this here on Thursday, committee chairman and Congress legislator Celestine Lyngdoh said that the celebration will showcase the rich cultural diversity of the indigenous people – “Bhois” of the district.

“The guests will have an opportunity to experience the cultural diversity and richness of authentic aboriginal traditions of the Bhois,” he said.
“Jhoh”, a seasonal and speciality drink of the Bhois will be served besides the traditional food, dances and games.
He said that it is one of the youngest districts of Meghalaya which came into existence and assumed the hierarchical status of the district on June 4, 1992 by upgrading the former civil sub-division.
The opening ceremony of the celebration will be inaugurated by veteran Congress leader from the region DD Lapang while Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma will attend the closing ceremony.
Lyngdoh also informed that the celebration will also release a souvenir with a brief note on society and culture including the Bhois’ Land Tenure System.
Highlighting on the achievements of the district, Lyngdoh said the four laning road project, airport (which are nearing completion), industrial estates and others are some of the achievements of the district.
Admitting that there is less contribution of the industries towards generating employment opportunities to the local people, he however said one of main reason given by these industries is that our people lack patience.
On the other hand, he further lamented that the district is yet to have its own government college besides lamenting the absence of a blood bank in the district.
Meanwhile, the committee will also organize Miss and Mr Jubilee which is open only to residents of the Ri Bhoi District.
