SHILLONG, May 13: Anti – incumbency against the incumbent Congress led government in Meghalaya will play a major role in the outcome of the 2018 state polls according to the Working President of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Bindo M Lanong.
“It will definitely affect Meghalaya because of poor performance of the government,” Lanong has said while adding that internal rifts with the party will also affect the Congress’ chances in the upcoming polls.

“The deep anguish in the Congress party against the leadership is there and so several party members left Congress,” Lanong said.
It is pertinent to note here that the issue of anti – incumbency against the Congress led government has also been stated by the state BJP which has indicated that it is going all out to remove the Congress from the corridors of power in the state.
Senior Congress leader and current Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Zenith Sangma meanwhile expressed confidence that the Congress will return to power even as he admitted that anti – incumbency is one of the issues that the party will have to deal with in the 2018 polls.
“There is always an anti incumbency factor with any party in power but what matters is how one manages to overcome any such anti incumbency factor and this is most important,” Sangma says.
Stating that the Congress led government under the leadership of Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma is living up to the aspirations of the people of the state, Sangma said, “As far as the present Government is concerned, Congress has come out with its manifesto in 2013 where it has made several promises and whatever is promised in the manifesto the party is trying its best to fulfill.”
