Roshan highlights importance of ASHAs in state’s health sector

SHILLONG, April 20: The pivotal role played by the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in the overall health scenario in Meghalaya, especially in the rural sectors was highlighted by the State Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Roshan Warjri during a programme held here on Thursday.


“The ASHA programme in the State is an important tool in enabling and strengthening community involvement in the health sector,” Warji said while addressing the gathering at the District Level Workshop and Training Programme for ASHAs of East Khasi Hills District on the theme “Strengthening Community Level Interventions-ASHAs Role” which was held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.
“ASHAs play a very important role in encouraging institutional delivery thereby reducing IMR and MMR in the State to a large extent,” Warjri said even as she expressed her hope that the training will further enhance the knowledge capacity of ASHAs in discharging their duties.
The inaugural programme was also attended by the Secretary, Health and Family Welfare cum Mission Director, NHM, HM Shangpliang, the Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman District Health Society, East Khasi Hills District, PS Dkhar, the Director of Health Services, MCH&FW cum  Jt. Mission Director, NHM, Dr. D Lyngdoh, the Jt. Director of Health Services, MCH &FW cum Nodal Officer, ASHA programme, Meghalaya, Dr. J Lyngwa, the DMHO, East Khasi Hills District, Dr. MR Basaiawmoit, officials from the Health and Social Welfare Department besides ASHAs from all the 8 Community and Rural Development Blocks of East Khasi Hills District.
Earlier, Warjri handed over the Best District ASHA Award to Fulgida Dkhar of Mawroh PHC, Mylliem C&RD Block for the year 2014-15 and Bandakerlin Japang of Sohbar PHC, Shella Bholaganj C&RD Block for the year 2015-16. The Minister also handed over the Best Block ASHA Award to Wilrose Syiemiong of Mawphlang C&RD Block for the year 2014-15, Fulgida Dkhar of Mylliem C&RD Block for the year 2014-15, Banisha Khongsti of Laitkroh C&RD Block for the year 2014-15 and Joplanglin Buhphang of Laitkroh C&RD Block for the year 2015-16.
During the inaugural function, Warjri also released a book titled, Community Processes Programme – Update 2016-2017 and a Documentary film on ASHA works.  The documentary film was screened during the programme.
