SHILLONG, April 12: The BJP led NDA centre government has come under severe criticism from several quarters including political parties and NGOs in Meghalaya for its move to observe Digital India Day on a Good Friday.
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) demanded the centre government to immediately scrap such decisions to observe Digital India Day on Good Friday and Good Governance Day on Christmas.

“We also suggest the state leaders of the BJP to urge their central leadership to respect the religious sentiment of the people and if they can’t it would be better for them to withdraw themselves from the party,” HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
He also said that the HYC also urged all the political parties especially those having close association with the BJP to put a stringent condition on the BJP that it should refrain from such activity.
“If not, then it is better for them to stay away from such a party which has no respect for the Christians,” he said.
Sharing similar concern, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) State Youth Wing has also termed the decision as a move to marginalize the minority.
Lauding the Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma’s stand on the decision, KHNAM-SYW president Thomas Passah said this is a pre-plan move when last time they did the same by declaring Good Governance Day on Christmas.
“We strongly condemn the Modi government on this which aims marginalizing the minority in the country,” he said while stating that such action is against the spirit of the Constitution of India.
