SHILLONG, Feb 28: The NPP legislator representing South Shillong Constituency, Sanbor Shullai has moved the Centre demanding an immediate stop to what he termed as ‘illegal encroachment’ by Defense authority in the Lawsohtun area of Shillong.
In a letter sent to the Union Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday, Shullai said, “The Defense establishment in Shillong, Meghalaya has been encroaching upon the public land in and around Shillong and more particularly in Lawsohtun, Shillong.”
He also informed the Union Minister that Lawsohtun area which is primarily a forest area is managed by the Dorbar Shnong / Village Council and the said land is community property as is the system prevalent in the State of Meghalaya.
“The said Lawsohtun area is a resource to many streams and drinking water sources for the people of Shillong. The area falls under the Meghalaya Protection of Catchment Area Act, 1990 as defined in section 2 (c),” he added.
Shullai also said that the defense authorities have all along been denying that any source of stream is originating from the said area even as he provided photographic evidence to counter the defense authority’s contention.
Shullai also said that the Defense authority was unable to provide any documentation to prove its ownership over this land when he had objected to an earlier attempt that was made by the authority to fence in the said area in 2013.
Stating that the defense authority is once again attempting to fence in the said area, which, according to Shullai is in direct violation of an order passed by the Gauhati High Court, Shullai has demanded that Parrikar instructs the defense authority to desist from such activities.
In this regard, Shullai has also forwarded copies of the letter sent to the Union Minister to the concerned defense officials, the KHADC, concerned government departments besides handing over the same to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Khasi Hills (EKH), PS Dkhar on Tuesday.
