SHILLONG, Feb 27: Even as he is recuperating from his injuries at Nongstoin Civil Hospital, the driver of a truck on whose hands the lives of 17 people were lost on Sunday has been booked for rash driving and negligence causing death.
“The driver of the truck identified as Aldening Syiem who has been admitted at the Nongstoin Civil Hospital has been booked for rash driving and negligence causing death,” district SP S Nongtynger said on Monday.
Syiem, who was directly responsible for the death of 17 people and carrying people in a goods carrying vehicle, have been booked under sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), 337 (causing hurt endangering life), 338 (causing grievous hurt endangering life) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC.
Syiem had driven the truck used for ferrying coal and had taken on 78 people to a nearby village to attend a church service before it overturned and rammed into a guardrail at around 8:30 am on Sunday killing 12 people on the spot. Five others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital.
Sixty two persons including the Syiem himself were admitted in various hospitals at West Khasi Hills district headquarter and Shillong Civil Hospital and North Eastern Indira Gandhi Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) near here.
Among those who lost their lives were nine women including a 13 year-old girl and the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the family members on Sunday itself after completion of formalities, Nongtynger said.
