SHILLONG, Jan 10: Refusing to accept the argument of the Mawhati Constituency Political Committee (MCPC) in regards to the arrest of Mawhati legislator, Julius Dorphang after he was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl, the Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) has urged the former not to attempt ‘whitewashing Dorphang’s crimes’.

“The fact remains that a 14 year old girl was sexually assaulted by this MLA and he needs to be held accountable under the criminal justice system which is not in the hands of the Mawhati electorate,” TUR member, Angela Rangad said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
Meanwhile TUR has also expressed its surprise over what it termed as the ‘politically insidious and ignorant statements’ made by the Sohiong Block Congress Committee which convened a meeting to further mislead people on the incidents of the Marvelene Inn Trafficking case.
“These political agents in the same breath even appeared to be promising roads, bridges etc as sops and inducements so as to further fool the Sohiong electorate,” Rangad opined.
She also pointed out that while HDR Lyngdoh may be the Sohiong MLA, but his powers as a Home Minister is one conferred in the name of all the people of Meghalaya and we therefore have every right to hold him accountable.
TUR further maintained that the demand for his resignation as home minister is to ensure an independent and wide ranging investigation into the trafficking case in which his family’s guest house has been named.
