TURA, Jan 10: Agonized by the rise in crimes against women and children, the Achik Youth Council (AYC) has sought the resignation of Meghalaya Home Minister, HDR Lyngdoh who is under fire following the incident at his son’s Marvellene’s Inn.
In a release issued on Tuesday by the vice president of the NGO, Silning Sangma, the NGO condemned the trend of rising sexual crimes in the state while also asking the state government to look at measures to increase awareness to such crimes.
“We are in deep agony. As a state we are known for our matrilineal society and its traditional practices which make such crimes highly alarming. These cases are increasing manifold over the past few years amongst all three societies. The matrilineal culture is now fast turning into rape culture in the state,” said Sangma.
Sangma felt the need for the state government to work along with likeminded NGOs and civil societies to disseminate information and taken initiative to curb such crimes.
“Awareness programmes in schools, colleges and universities will be helpful to tackle such crimes. We condemn such incidents and culprits involved in those cases should be booked and punished as per the provisions of the law,” said Sangma.
Sangma further sought the augmentation of moral values in family institutions to ensure such crimes were curbed. “Under the POCSO Act, the government is responsible for giving awareness about rights to citizens, but in Meghalaya awareness campaign is at zero. More Fast Track Courts should be established in the state in order to speed up these cases. Rape cases in Garo Hills are an alarming signal towards deteriorating society. Education with moral values is essential to end such incidents in future,” said Sangma.
Calling on the home minister to step down, the NGO said, “HDR Lyngdoh should step down from his cabinet berth for the conduct of a free and fair investigation into the rape of 14 year old girl at Marvellene’s Inn. Police department should work to provide justice to the innocent girl.”
