SHILLONG, Jan 07: The Meghalaya police on Saturday transferred the Mawryngkneng gang-rape case, which involved the Sordar and locality head of Mawryngkneng and another 6 accused, to its women’s cell and is seeking police remand of the accused to expedite the investigation and charge sheet them.
“We have transferred the case to women police and will ask for police remand of the accused to expedite the investigation and charge sheet them,” Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said on Saturday.

It may be mentioned that out of the eight accused in the gang rape, two were arrested by the police on Friday while six others surrendered before the court on the same day.
On the role of the Sordar and dorbar dong to settle the matter through a compromise instead of reporting the crime, Syiem said, “It’s a heinous offence to try to scuttle the matter,” further informing that one of accused is related to the Rangbah dong of the locality. “It is not appropriate and amounts to abetment,” Syiem added.
Meanwhile, the Sordar who has been admitted in the Civil Hospital here was produced in the court on Saturday.
It may be reminded that it was on the night of January 1 this year that a 17 year old girl was gang raped by six individuals and when the matter was reported to the Sordar the next day, the latter had allegedly asked the victim’s family to come to the negotiation table while stating that reporting the same to the police would have an adverse effect on the reputation of the village.
