Arrested Sordar takes medical respite

SHILONG, Jan 07: Providing a temporary respite to his recent problems with the law, the arrested Sordar of Mawryngkneng, Peter Lawai was admitted in Civil Hospital, Shillong after he had complained of health problems.
Lawai was arrested after he was accused of trying to arrange a compromise between the family of the victim of the Mawryngkneng gang rape case and those accused of the crime.
 “The Sordar of Mawryngkneng Peter J Lawai village was admitted in the hospital for medical treatment,” East Khasi Hills District SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed here on Saturday.

Syiem however pointed out that once Lawai is discharged from the hospital, he would immediately be produced before the court.
Lawai along with Goldenstar Mukhim, the Rangbah Dong (locality head) of Mawmang locality, where the heinous crime took place, were booked on Friday for their alleged role in trying to facilitate a “compromise” in the case.
“The punishment for the abetment case taken up against them, can be extended up to 7 years as per the POCSO Act,” Syiem said.
The action also came after relatives of the victim strongly demanded action against the two.
They have taken serious offence on the failure of these traditional heads to hand over the accused persons when they appeared before the dorbar meeting convened twice on the nights of January 2 and January 3.
It may be mentioned here, the incident took place at 9pm at Mawmang locality of Mawryngkneng village on January 1, when the girl was going home from her aunt’s place, after having a New Year meal there.
Meanwhile, police are also seeking police custody of the six accused persons, who surrendered on Friday before the local court, which remanded them to 14 days judicial custody.
They have been identified as Sanlang Kharlukhi, Rimon Surong, Requestor Mukhim, Shan Dkhar, Sanbhalang Mawthoh and Banlumlang Rynjah.
Requester is the younger brother and Shan Dkhar of Mynso village in West Jaintia Hills District is the driver of the locality head.
